Cardano Governance Framework and the Role of DReps

Cardano governance is being bootstrapped! On 21.45 UTC on September 1st the Cardano network Hard Forked. A hard fork is when a blockchain makes a non-backwards compatible upgrade. With this first of a two part upgrade, the platform reaches 1 step shy of bookending an eight year long initial roadmap. The bootstrapping phase is meant to give the community time to get acquainted with the new governance tooling for a period of at least 90 days. One new role that people will be learning about and registering for during the bootstrapping phase is the role of DRep. Along with the Hard Fork, we’ve launched a 1694.io to help Registered Delegated Representatives (DReps) and Ada holders easily find their way in this new era.

The Role of DReps

In Cardano’s Governance era DReps play a crucial role. These are individuals or entities chosen by the ADA holders to represent their voting power in governance decisions. The DReps act as the bridge between the wider community and the governance process, ensuring that the diverse perspectives within the Cardano ecosystem are adequately represented.

1694.io

1694.io is a community platform to help Cardanians learn about and participate in Cardano governance. The platform is designed to embody the principles of transparency, inclusivity, and innovation that define the Cardano ecosystem. Here is what you can expect:

DReps can claim their profile For those considering becoming a DRep, the platform offers guidance on how to get involved, what responsibilities the role entails, and how to effectively represent the community’s interests. The process is designed to be accessible, ensuring that anyone with a passion for Cardano’s future can participate meaningfully.

The public can see list of all DReps and view individual profiles 1694.io offers a detailed overview of the various candidates, each bringing unique expertise and vision to the table. This list is not just a directory; it’s a tool for ADA holders to make informed decisions about who they want to represent their interests in the governance process. It does this by blending on-chain information about DReps milestones and activities as well as off-chain posts DReps can add to their claimed profiles.

The public can read the original CIP While CIPs discussion typically happens on Github comments or in forums fraught with user experience challenges, 1694.io is meant to be a visually easy to consume presentation of a very detailed and technical document.

The Bigger Picture

As we move forward, the success of Cardano governance will depend on active participation from the community. 1694.io will continue to grow and evolve as an open source community project spearheaded by the lido crew to keep making it as easy as possible to actively participate. Thanks to Intersect, a Cardano’s Members Based Organization for the initial grant that helped kick the project off.
